6 Traits of People With Incredible Mental Toughness

2020 has definitely tested our patience. We’ve unanimously been bombarded from every direction by events that have tested our ability to remain mentally tough. Through it all, there are giants among us who possess the grit to stay on course.

The definition of grit almost perfectly describes qualities every successful person possesses, because mental toughness builds the foundations for long-term success…even in times of uncertainty.

Prioritizing, delaying gratification, withstanding temptation, and overcoming fear are all qualities that are necessary in times of distress. They also require mental strength and toughness, so it’s no coincidence they’re the qualities of remarkably successful people.

Here are a few ways you can become mentally stronger -and as a result, more successful:

Put aside things you have no ability to impact.

Mental strength is like muscle strength – no one has an unlimited supply. Why waste your mental energy on things you can’t control? You can’t control the past or the future, so stop worrying about both. Focus on what you can do today to solve the problem.

Always act as if you’re in total control.

Mentally tough people don’t wait for good luck or worry about bad luck. They act as if success (or failure) is totally within their control. If they succeed, they caused it. If they fail, they caused that too.

Celebrate the success of others.

Many people see success as a zero-sum game; there’s only so much to go around. Winners believe in the law of abundance. When someone else shines, they cheer them on.

Don’t resent awesomeness. Create and celebrate it wherever you find it. In time you’ll find more of it in yourself.

Count your blessings.

Mentally tough people take time out of each day to focus on what they have. You have a lot to be thankful for. Don’t worry about what others have that you don’t.

Focus on the solution, not the emotions.

So many people get bent out of shape about situations and let their anger get in the way of rational thinking and problem-solving. Every problem has a solution, and you will never find it if you let emotions get in the way.

Focus on relationships – not things.

Possessions will not make you happy. A cool car might make you feel good for a while, but without someone to share it, you will be a lonely rider. Your car, clothes, title; those are all things. People may like your things, but that doesn’t mean they like you.

Genuine relationships make you happier. You’ll only form them when you stop trying to impress people and instead focus on forming a bond. The relationships in your life are what will help get you through the tough times and make you feel better about everything.

At the end of the day, tough times don’t last. Tough people do.
